The consultation
It is considered good planning practice to promote effective public participation and invite pre-draft contributions from the community, as recommended in the Local Area Plans Guidelines for Planning Authorities (DECLG, 2013).
The pre-draft public consultation commenced on 9 July 2025 with a newspaper notice in the Sligo Weekender. To assist those who wanted to participate in the public consultation, the Development Planning Unit prepared a brief Pre-Draft Consultation document – an “Issues Paper”.
The document was published on Sligo County Council’s online consultation platform (https://consult.sligococo.ie/en/) and on the Council’s website (https://www.sligococo.ie/planning/DevelopmentPlans/ProposedSligoTownandEnvironsUrbanAreaPlan/), where it remains available for viewing and download.
The public was invited to make written submissions between 9 July and 22 August 2025. The Council’s social media channels were also used regularly to advertise the consultation.
Your views and suggestions
The consultation received a diverse range of submissions, demonstrating strong public and stakeholder engagement. See Section 1.2 of the attached report for a brief summary of the submissions received.
Section 2 of this report summarises the submissions in bullet point form and gives the response of the Planning Authority in relation to each submission.
Section 3 lists the persons and organisations who made submissions and observations.
Outcomes
A formal Chief Executive’s report is not required by legislation. However, it is considered good practice to acknowledge and respond to all submissions received. Sligo County Council thank everybody who made a submission or observation on this consultation. Your views and suggestions are appreciated and will be taken into consideration as we prepare a Draft Plan.
The final report on all submissions recieved during the consultation period is available for viewing or download below (under Reports).
During the specified consultation period, 49 submissions were received. Fourty-three submissions were made directly through the consultation portal. A further six submissions were received by e-mail, which were redacted, where necessary, and uploaded to the portal by Planning Section staff members.
Twenty-six submissions were received from individuals (six of which were second and third submissions from the same author), eleven from state bodies, eight from community groups, a joint submission from two non-profit organisations and three submissions received from private companies.
