RE-IMAGINE SLIGO GAOL

Part 8 consultation process

Sligo Gaol is a nationally important 19th century heritage complex located in Sligo Town which has long been mostly derelict and under-utilitsed. The complex has been selected as a potential project for funding from  'THRIVE' – the Town Centre First Heritage Revival Scheme* (see below).

Sligo County Council propose to carry out works at the Sligo Gaol (Look right under 'Materials'  or click here for the full published public notice).

The proposed development includes the refurbishment of the historical 19th-century structures on site to facilitate the use of the  complex for tourism and community  purposes.  The structures to be refurbished include Governor’s House, the three-storey asylum building and the connecting two-storey cell blocks as well as the link corridor connecting Governor’s House with the asylum building.

It is proposed to construct a new single-storey reception building (c. 100 sq.m) with an ancillary coffee kiosk, adjoining the asylum building to the east and provide provide new hard and soft landscaping areas, including public lighting and new boundary treatments.  Signage, car and bicycle parking and all associated ancillary works above and below ground will be included in the works.

The proposed development will also consist of the demolition/removal of existing, non-original, twentieth-century structures, including the following: vehicle storage sheds and workshops; single storey office building; machine shop; storage building ; galvanized steel yard roofing; portable cabins, shipping containers, other temporary structures and a  2.5m high concrete dividing wall.

Vehicular access to the site will continue to be provided at the existing locations from Gaol Road. Provision will also be made for landscaped, ramped access to Riverside through an existing opening in the perimeter wall to the north of the cell block.
